The Meaning of Hexis

The Meaning of Hexis

I have wanted to write this for a while. Not to announce anything, but to tell you who we are, how we think, and what Hexis means.

Let me start with our name, because everything else follows from it.

Hexis is Aristotle's word for a stable disposition: a way of being that is developed through practice and habituation. This is something you build over time through repeated actions, not something you're born with. Once it is formed, it shapes your behaviour.

We chose this name deliberately because the daily practice of fuelling, and adjusting it appropriately according to the demands of your training and competition, is a Hexis. It is not the heroics of one single day, it is built meal by meal, session by session, over time until it is a stable behaviour you can rely on to elevate your performance and enhance your health.

To help you develop these behaviours, Dr Sam Impey, Dr Xiaoxi Yan and I have reflected throughout our applied practice in elite sport, academic research and Hexis journey to date, and we have developed a set of core beliefs that fuel how we build Hexis. Everything on our roadmap is aligned with one or more of these beliefs, and we wanted to share them with you.

Our foundational belief is that:

  • Every athlete is unique: there is no such thing as an average athlete, and personalised and periodised nutrition should always be tailored to an individual, their physiology and their unique training and competition demands.

Alongside this foundation sit three beliefs, which are our pillars:

  • Science should always be translated into its practical application: we eat food, not numbers. Evidence needs to be translated into what goes on the plate and daily actions.
  • Your data should work harder for you: wearable and training data should feed personalised fuelling and recovery nutrition strategies, automatically and in real-time. 
  • Personalised nutrition support has to be 24/7, on demand: needing to know "what to do next" can happen at any moment, and we want to be there for you.

The meaning of Hexis and our beliefs power our mission, to make nutrition your smartest training tool. Think about it: your wearable captures your performance and recovery, your training planner records your adherence and progress, but your nutrition quite literally fuels them all. Fuel. Perform. Recover. Repeat.

I want to finish by acknowledging that, just like your own performance, Hexis is always striving to improve. Let's do it together.
